The city was first mentioned in 1066, a year forever remembered in Šibenik craft beer scene, in a document issued by the most important Croatian ruler - the king Petar Krešimir IV. Šibenik obtained the status of a native Croatian town in 1290, when the Diocese of Šibenik was established and its nickname, The Krešimir's city stands to this day.
The decision to build the Cathedral of St. James in Šibenik came in 1402. and the work began in 1431. Šibenik’s St. James’ construction took around a century and finished in 1535 and it is true testimony of determination and sacrifice for generations to come.
Three architects who succeeded one another, Francesco di Giacomo, Georgius Mathei Dalmaticus and Niccolò di Giovanni Fiorentino, engineered the Cathedral to be built entirely from stone and using unique construction techniques for the dome of the Cathedral as well as other parts.
An interesting touch are the 71 sculptured faces of men, women, and children, which show a combination of Gothic and Renaissance art among other magnificent details.
