Tips for your vacation in Primošten

Located in the heart of Dalmatia, the picturesque town of Primošten is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in Croatia.

This romantic old town found its place on the Adriatic coast, just 28 km away from Šibenik, and about 75 km away from the city of Split. The town of Primošten counts less than 3000 inhabitants but offers its visitors enchanting sights, exciting attractions, amazing accommodations, and one of the most beautiful beaches with a crystal clear sea.

Primošten owes its name to historic events that happened around the year 1564. and that involved this town. Originally, Primošten was an island and during the Turk attacks citizens of Primošten, to protect themselves, hid on the island Gola Glava, located near the Primošten coast. They built the walls around the city and a movable wooden bridge that connected the island with the coast, and that is how the town got its name - premošten, or by the bridge. Today the island and the mainland are connected by a causeway built several decades later.

How to reach Primošten?

The easiest way to get to Primošten is by following the state road D8, also known as Adriatic Highway. It’s the longest intercity state road in Croatia with a total length of 634.1 km. The road runs from the Slovenian border via Rijeka, Senj, Zadar, Šibenik, Split, Opuzen, and Dubrovnik and ends at the state border with Montenegro. The trip is pleasant as the road follows the beautiful Croatian coastline.

If you’re arriving by plane, the nearest airport is the airport in Split, located 38 km away, and from there you can take one of the bus lines or private transportation to Primošten.

Primošten itinerary

Primošten is a place where most people come to relax and unwind. The city doesn’t have that many typical attractions like museums, galleries, or big squares with show-off statues but on every street corner, you will find something new to discover.

Beautiful beaches are backed by fragrant pines, traditional restaurants serve fresh seafood with stunning views, seafront cafes thrive with locals, its car-free, old town centre offers complete peace in the traditional Dalmatian surroundings, and we also shouldn’t forget prime nightlife spots that are within easy reach.

Explore the Old Town

As we mentioned before, the old town was originally an island, connected to the mainland via a movable bridge, then later a causeway was built. This was followed by the construction of the scenic stone gates that still stand at the Old Town entrance.

Starting the city tour from the old city gate is the best way to experience this charming Dalmatian town. At the entrance to the peninsula, you can find a Church of St Rocco, and in front of it a statue of Ivan Šarić, a priest.

Following the main street, Ulica Svetog Jurja, uphill from the main square you will find beauty around every corner if you take a moment to appreciate it. In this seaside time capsule of historic buildings, tiny vineyards grow up the walls of old stone, pastel window shutters line the old stone houses, and wonderful architecture decorates the scene everywhere.

At the top of the hill, in the heart of the Old Town, you will find the Church of St. George, built in the 15th century. This historic centrepiece is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Primošten, from the church you can enjoy the amazing view of the city, especially if you visit at sunset.

If you want to take a breathtaking photo while in Primošten with the Old town in the background, look for The Statue of the Fisherman with a cat and take a peek at the daily life of old Primošten habitants.

Another statue that represents the life of the people that lived and worked in Primošten in old times is a Monument to Težak or a hard-working man. The statue is located near the city gate and shows a woman sitting on a donkey and a man walking next to them.Old Town Primošten

Our Lady of Loreto

Just a short ride out of the town, on Gaj hill, watching over Primošten, stands the Our Lady of Loretto statue. This 17-metre-high shrine to the Virgin Mary is one of the tallest statues dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the world.

From the top of the Gaj hill, you can also enjoy the most mesmerising view of Primošten and the beautiful coast and landscapes that surround it, while drinking a cup of your favourite drink in a cafe that is located here.

Discover Beautiful Beaches

If you feel the need to relax and refresh yourself while discovering the beautiful corners of Primošten, you’ll be more than happy to know that the Primošten beaches are one of the most amazing beaches in Croatia.

Mala Raduča is the main city beach and is located in the Old town. Crystal clear sea and beautiful sceneries of the historic Old town are just a small part of the reasons why this beach is so popular among the visitors as well as locals. The beach offers a lot of fun activities and it’s close to the city promenade so there are a lot of restaurants and bars nearby.

A lot of other amazing beaches can be found a little further like Velika Raduča, Dolac, Dagna, or Zatoka.

Enjoy good food

Your Primošten experience wouldn’t be complete without trying some of the local traditional food in one of many rustic taverns, or as people in Dalmatia call them - konoba.

On the menus, you will find all of the famous traditional Dalmatian and Mediterranean dishes like black or seafood risotto, shrimp dishes, octopus salad, grilled meat, and tasty lamb. Portions in Dalmatia are big so prepare your bellies and be ready to be swapped away by amazing and unique flavours of traditional cuisine.

Visit the vineyards

The wines of Croatia are very well known around the world, and some of the most famous ones originate from Primošten.

Primošten vines are distinctive and exceptional and the vineyards here are so unique that they are under consideration to be included in UNESCO World Heritage List. The vineyards are divided by a lattice of low stone walls and the vines are planted into the rocky seashore. This challenging terrain for both the vines as well as the winegrowers, from the distance, forms an unusual sight that some like to call the "stone face of Primošten".

Experience the nightlife

One of Croatia's most famous nightclubs - Aurora, can be found just a few kilometres south of the town. Aurora is open only during the summer months of July and August, and ladies' nights, foam parties, and popular Croatian and Balkan stars are all part of the program during this time.

Aurora club is less than 15 minutes away from Primošten and can easily be reached by car.

If you’re not into clubbing you can visit one of the pubs in the town centre and enjoy their live music events while enjoying your favourite drink.
