Top 8 things to do in Primošten

The beautiful town of Primošten is located in the heart of Dalmatia, on the Adriatic coast, just 28 kilometers away from Šibenik, and about an hour drive away from the popular tourist destination, the city of Split

Pimošten is one of the most enchanting towns on the Croatian coast, the city has less than 3000 habitats but will leave you speechless with its amazing sights, beautiful accommodations, and picturesque beaches.

The town received its name as a result of historical events that occurred around 1564. Primošten was an island at the beginning and during the Turk attacks the citizens of Primošten, to protect themselves, hid on the nearby island.

Using a movable wooden bridge, they connected the island with the coast, giving the town its name - premošten, or ‘connected by the bridge’. Several decades later, a causeway was built to connect the island and the mainland.

There are a variety of memorable things you can do while staying in this lovely city, and we bring you a list of the top eight you shouldn’t miss.

  1. Discover the old town

The best place to start your Primošten city tour is at the Old Town Gate. The town gates are part of the stone remains of the old defensive walls, and behind them, a labyrinth of narrow streets leads you to the church of Saint George, the highest town point. The Church of Saint George was built in 1485 and is one of the most beautiful sights in Primošten.

While walking the picturesque city streets you will find many beautifully designed courtyards, and small landscaped gardens, blooming in bright colors, hidden among traditional dalmatian stone houses.

Primošten has a few beautiful photo points and the most famous one is near The statue of a Fisherman with a cat, which represents the daily life of Primošten habitants. You can take a breathtaking photo from this location with the old town of Primošten in the background.

Monument to Težak, a hard-working man, is another statue that represents the life of the people that lived and worked in Primošten throughout history. A statue shows a woman sitting on a donkey and a man walking next to her, and is located just outside of the city gates.

  1. Walk around the old city walls

One of the most enjoyable things to do in Primošten is walking around the old town. As we already said Primošten was once an island, and big fortress walls surrounded the city in order to protect it from the Turk attacks.

Today the city is no longer in danger but the remains of those stone walls can still be seen if you take a half an hour's walk by the sea around the old town.

Enjoy the walk by the coast as you observe the deep blue sea and cliffs, and don’t forget that Primošten has some of the most beautiful beaches, so you can stop and take a swim if you feel like it.

  1. Relax at Primošten beaches

Primošten is a real beach paradise, whether you like pebble or stone beaches, anyone can find a perfect one here, and the sea is crystal clear no matter which one you choose. The coast of Primošten has more than 20 kilometers of beautiful beaches on which you can enjoy with your friends, family, and pets.

The most famous Primošten beach is Velika Rudača. On the east side of the peninsula, the beach is pebble, and offers a lot of fun attractions, beach bars, and enough shade to spend a whole day by the sea.

On the other side of the peninsula, you can find Mala Raduča, also very popular among locals and tourists. Some of the other famous beaches are Garbina, Varoš, and Dagna.

  1. Enjoy traditional Dalmatian dishes

Visiting Primošten wouldn’t be complete without trying some of the most famous Dalmatian dishes, and the best place to do so is by visiting one of the famous local taverns, or how locals call it konoba. Konobas offer a wide range of traditional seafood and grilled meat dishes and you can be sure you will be delighted with the amazing flavors of whichever you choose.

  1. Drink a glass of wine in one of Primošten Wineries

Croatia is very well known around the world for its great wines. While traveling in Croatia you visit numerous wine roads and wine regions, including the Primošten area.

Some of the famous wineries located here are Matošin Winery, Prga Vina, Testament Winery, and probably the most famous one among them, The Bucavac vineyards.

Located 3 kilometers south of Primošten, the vineyards are surrounded by unique stone walls, called the drywall, and in the red soil covered with stones here grows the indigenous Babić vine, which is known for its high quality.

One interesting fact is that the picture of these vineyards stands in the lobby of the UN headquarters in New York, as a symbol of the victory of man's work over nature.

  1. Visit Our Lady of Loreto Statue

One of the most beautiful viewpoints in Primošten is on Gaj hill, where a 17-meter-high statue of Our Lady of Loreto was inaugurated in May 2017, to watch and guard over the city. Lady Loreto is a patron saint of Primošten, and this is one of the highest statues of this kind in the world.

The statue can be reached by car or by hike from Primošten. Near the statue, there is a small bar where visitors can enjoy the view while drinking a cup of their favorite drink and a viewpoint with a beautiful panoramic view of one of the most beautiful places in Dalmatia - Šibenik archipelago, Primošten, Šibenik, Rogoznica, and the sea that surround it.

The best time of the day to visit is at sunset when you can admire beautiful colors above the Adriatic sea, as the sun sets.

  1. Primošten nightlife

Primošten is a perfect place to visit during the season if you're searching for great nightlife. A few kilometers south of Primošten one of the most famous Croatian clubs, Aurora, is located.

The club is open during July and August and the club program includes shows from famous Croatian and regional stars as well as worldwide known DJs. If you’re into a more peaceful atmosphere, Primošten has a lot of bars and pubs in the city center where you can enjoy live music and local craft beers, and tasty cocktails.

  1. Explore the Primošten area

If you’re spending a few days in Primošten, don’t miss a chance to explore the Primošten area. You can make a day trip to one of the nearby cities like Šibenik, Trogir, and Split, and discover their rich history and beautiful sights.

If you’re more into spending your time in nature, a visit to National Park Krka or nature wonder Dragon Eye in Rogoznica is just one of a few destinations that should add to your travel list.
